The Literal Commandment

You shall not eat leavened bread with it; seven days you shall eat with it unleavened bread, the bread of affliction (for you came out of the land of Egypt in haste), so that you may remember all the days of your life the day when you came out of the land of Egypt. (Deuteronomy 16:3)

The literal commandment is that we should not eat leavened bread with the Passover lamb (Deuteronomy 16:2) on the fourteenth day of the month of Nisan: the day of Passover.

Messiah Says

Messiah implicitly affirmed this commandment when He spoke about the Law:

"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)

Pictures of Messiah

In Scripture, leaven provides a picture of sin: leaven causes bread to become "puffed up" (i.e., prideful and sinful). This commandment to not eat leavened bread on the afternoon of the 14th of Nisan (Passover) pictures the sinless work of Messiah as our Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7).

How Messiah Fulfilled

Messiah fulfilled this commandment by not eating leavened food on the afternoon of the 14th of Nisan (Passover).

Traditional Observance

The traditional observance of this commandment involves abstaining from any food (not just bread) that contains leaven (yeast or other leavening agents) on the day of Passover. The Passover lamb was to be sacrificed at twilight on Passover and eating food with leaven in it that afternoon would have been considered "eating leavened bread with it" in violation of the command.

Other Notes

We are able to fulfill this commandment and should not eat leavened food on the afternoon of the 14th of Nisan.
