The Literal Commandment

You shall not detest an Edomite, for he is your brother; you shall not detest an Egyptian, because you were an alien in his land. The sons of the third generation who are born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD. (Deuteronomy 23:7-8)

The literal commandment is that we should not detest an Edomite or prevent their third generation children from entering the assembly of the LORD.

Messiah Says

Messiah implicitly affirmed this commandment when He spoke about the Law:

"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)

Pictures of Messiah

Although Ammon and Moab (those whose hearts were hardened against G-d's chosen people) are forbidden from entering into the assembly of the LORD, G-d shows grace to Edomites and Egyptians but allows "the sons of the third generation who are born to them" to enter into the assembly (Deuteronomy 23:8).

In a similar fashion, those who are enemies of G-d (all of us before we come to faith! Romans 5:10) cannot enter into the assembly but G-d shows grace to those whom He chooses.

How Messiah Fulfilled

Messiah never fulfilled this commandment in either its literal or traditional sense.

Traditional Observance

The traditional observance of this commandment is that Jews are forbidden from marrying Edomites (or their modern-day equivalent) unless they are third-generation converts to Judaism.

Other Notes

We are able to fulfill this commandment today and we should not prevent third-generation Edomites from entering the assembly of the LORD (through marriage or otherwise).
