The Literal Commandment

You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. (Deuteronomy 6:7)

The literal commandment is that we should teach G-d's commandments diligently to our children. However, in order to be able to teach the commandments we have to learn them first.

Messiah Says

Messiah affirms this commandment:

"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)

Pictures of Messiah

Messiah came and taught the Law (He was a rabbi after all- e.g. Mark 9:5). He is the Word made flesh (John 1:14) and is the perfect teacher and perfect example of obedience to the commandments of G-d. When we teach the Law, we are teaching about the standard of behavior that Messiah exhibited throughout His life.

How Messiah Fulfilled

Messiah taught His disciples the proper interpretation, priority, and expression of G-d's commandments and instructed them to do the same:

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20)

He provided the perfect fulfillment of this commandment by perfectly teaching others and then instructing them to take that perfect teaching to others.

Traditional Observance

This commandment is traditionally fulfilled by learning G-d's commandments and instructions. In Hebrew communities it is known as the Torah. Torah is the Hebrew word that is translated as "Law" but also means "instruction". By learning the Torah we come to know what we should and should not do according to G-d's standards. By living the Torah commandments we reflect G-d's flawless character into a flawed and sinful world.

Other Notes

We are able to fulfill this commandment today by learning, living, and teaching others the instruction, wisdom, and character of G-d as revealed in His Holy Law.

This commandment is repeated in numerous ways and places within Scripture. For example:

...and you shall learn them and take care to do them (Deuteronomy 5:1),

...that they may learn (Deuteronomy 31:12),

...and you shall team them to your children (Deuteronomy 11:19) and others.
